2013 | Linz (AT)State-of-the-Art Lighting Technology for the New Opera House in Linz

On April 11, 2013 the lights were officially turned on in the new opera house in Linz (Austria). No other theater or opera house in the world features such a large combination of proven technologies like the “Musiktheater Linz”. Kraftwerk Living Technologies was responsible for the designing and installing the entire lighting technology – one of the most modern systems in Europe.

More than 1,000 spotlights by reputable manufacturers – including 400 profile spotlights and 55 moving head spotlights – shed light on one of the largest revolving stages in the world. In the background, 3 control panels (56 universes / 16,000 devices each), 18 dimmer cabinets, 38 radio controlled DMX dimmers, 12 switch control boxes, 18 control cabinets, 19 energy main distributors (3,700 kW in total) as well as 800 distribution boxes ensure utmost flexibility. In total, more than 300 km of cable were laid. Christian Hofer, Technical Director at Kraftwerk Living Technologies says: “This lighting system we designed for the Musiktheater Linz is a benchmark for the whole industry and a milestone in our reference list.”

Illumination of the "Parzival"

A part of the opening ceremony was the premiere of the production “Ein Parzival”, an open air spectacle performed by the Catalan ensemble “La Fura dels Baus”. For this performance, the facade and the courtyard in front of the Musiktheater turned into the stage. Accompanied by Richard Wagner’s music and Wolfram Eschenbach’s texts, the 12,000 spectators enjoyed the show – flying people, mystical figures, fire, pyrotechnics, and the more than 10-meter tall “Parzival”. Kraftwerk Living Technologies worked on the entire lighting system, including illumination of the “Parzival”, as well as all the projections used in an amazing show.
